One of the biggest campaigns the Greenpeace Korea works on is the anti-nuclear campaign. Korea has the highest nuclear density in the world with 23 nuclear power plants in the country. Five plants are under construction and six more plants are planned for construction in the near future. Since the Korean government advertises the economic efficiency of nuclear energy without including the cost of taking care of the nuclear waste, the public perception of nuclear energy is rather positive in Korea. Yet, despite the prominent usage of nuclear power, the efforts to prevent accidents are very limited. Gori, Korea, for example, is the only place in the world with 10 nuclear reactors next to one another. Due to the dangers of chain explosion and leakage, no other country constructs as many nuclear reactors in one place.

What the Greenpeace proposes is to gradually stop using nuclear energy by converting to sustainable energy sources and to extend the Precautionary Action Zones (PAZ) and the Urgent Protective Action Planning Zones (UPZ) to fit the international standards. The PAZ and UPZ are zones around the nuclear power plants designated to prepare for the possible disaster by keeping medications and evacuating in case of the nuclear reactor malfunctions. While the international standard is at 30km radius, the Korean regulation stops at 5~10km. Considering the great population density in Korea even around the nuclear power plants, the need for the Korean government to increase protection is crucial. The Greenpeace campaigned for the gradual nuclear eradication with the 3rd Rainbow Warrior in Gori this July to raise awareness of the need to move away from nuclear energy.
